We are delighted to announce that RED’s Managing Director Mike Green, has been appointed to the Board at the CITB.
Mike, who started his career within the construction industry by completing the CITB Technicians residential YTS course at Bircham Newton with Alfred McAlpine, is a passionate advocate for training & development within the industry.
Speaking about the appointment and what drove his interest in the post, Mike commented:
“The invaluable foundations I gained via my very first training and development opportunity have underpinned my entire career. Now, with 33 years’ experience in the industry, I feel that this connection combined with my overall experience and passion for upskilling and development, means I can continue to drive advancements and encourage more talent into construction.’
Following the completion of his ONC and HNC, once again through the CITB at Bircham and Alfred McAlpine, Mike has since worked on some of the UK’s most prestigious developments.
‘Being able to ‘earn and learn’ within my formative years whilst gaining invaluable ‘on the job’ experience rather than following the traditional University route has been hugely instrumental in my career trajectory and shaped the professional I have become.’
In 2003 Mike founded RED Systems, and the company has grown to become a £14m turnover operation, alongside a number of specialist subsidiary companies within the overall group structure.
Leading by example, in 2018 Mike embarked on what he describes as ‘the most rewarding period of my educational journey to date’ when he embarked on an MBA, through the government apprenticeship scheme, and he became a member of the Chartered Management Institute.
‘Combining my industry experience with academic learning has been both challenging and hugely inspirational,’ said Mike. ‘More than anything, the experience has encouraged me to promote lifelong learning opportunities for our team at RED Systems and I have developed a true passion for driving development, upskilling my workforce and helping colleagues achieve their full potential.’
‘The Department for Business Innovation and Skills suggests that 99.9% of all businesses within the construction industry are SME’s (2019) and through my own experience I recognise the importance of business owners as decisions makers when considering training requirements particularly when investing in upskilling beyond the parameters of statutory requirements.’
‘My role as Managing Director requires me to regularly tackle complex projects and challenges. Recently I have invested in analytical data analysis across the company, this has assisted with decision making and strategic planning across the organisation. My opinion is that the Construction Industry must develop in this area if we are to reduce wastage and margin erosion to create attractive, financially stable working environments to support recruitment and employee development.’
