Herculaneum Quay

Project Overview

The two 15-storey towers at Herculaneum Quay, form part of Liverpool’s exclusive waterfront project. RED Systems provided a full envelope including the provision of all mast climbers and external access, plus materials which are designed to withstand the harsh marine environment.

The development initially started in 2007 and then ground to a halt during the recession of 2008 with only the steel and concrete frame completed up to the fourth floor. Back in 2015 with new investment the project started moving forward again with the client selecting a unitised system fabricator from overseas. However, the system failed during the design process when the fabricator was unable to provide CE Marking. At that point RED were asked to get involved and provide a solution, reverting back to the original ‘stick’ curtain walling design, fully CE Marked and all in accordance with British/European Standards and Building Regulations.

Herculaneum Quay They said...

Herculaneum Quay was undoubtedly a challenging project for RED Systems. With the site located on the banks of the River Mersey we encountered changeable and often severe weather conditions as well as logistical issues on an extremely tight site with numerous different trades operating simultaneously. However, through a combination of detailed planning at pre-construction phase and an experienced and knowledgeable site team the installation was an unmitigated success and ensures that Herculaneum Quay will be a landmark development on the Liverpool waterfront.

Design

The design was a based on a full ‘wrap-around’ curtain walling system incorporating concealed opening vents. One of the major challenges was designing the bespoke bracketry to fully support the curtain walling system. As the building structure had already been completed by the time RED were appointed it was not possible to liaise with other sub-contractors to ensure the steel and concrete structures were set-out to facilitate the most efficient installation of the curtain walling. Despite this, RED overcame these hurdles and provided bespoke brackets through-out. There was an unprecedented amount of bracket types to design and manufacture – it was really was an outstanding achievement.
