Gorton Community Hub

Project Overview

This new build scheme has delivered a learning, health and community hub in Gorton, Manchester, which has brought a range of services under one roof.

From health and social care to training and employment support, the new hub offers a wide range of services and facilities for the local community. The super-modern building has also helped to lower the carbon footprint of the services who are now housed in the new space, as previously, they were all located at separate, inefficient sites.

Design Innovation

During the design phase, Morgan Sindall suggested an innovative steel frame solution, which saved a further 561tCO2e of embodied carbon within the fabric.

RED contributed towards carbon reductions by using Technal’s Circal 75R aluminium profiles. 84% of the profiles we used were made from Circal 75R which saved the equivalent of 37.5 tons of CO2! Circal 75R is made from recycled post consumer scrap and achieves a carbon footprint of 2.3Kg CO2 per 1kg of aluminium produced. The European average for produced primary aluminium is 8.6Kg CO2 per 1kg of aluminium, so this is a significant contribution towards reducing the carbon footprint of the project.

It has been a pleasure to work on another great scheme alongside the team from RED Systems. Super-efficient as always and fantastic feedback from the site team, plus a truly inspirational scheme that will serve the local community for many years to come.

Social Value in Action

The three-story building now gives visitors a range of services including the One Manchester Hub, a provider of social housing and community services that help people stay healthy and fit as well as managing their money, building their skills and offering enterprise support.

Crucially, the project has created £16m social value in the local area which represents a 78% return on investment to date.

RED also attended local events alongside Morgan Sindall and members of the community to ensue a high level of engagement at all times – it was extremely important that those who would benefit most from the new hub felt connected to what was happening on site during the construction phase.
